CLUB CULTURE

As clubs started to reopen the excitement of student life was brought back to life. With all clubs closed since march 2020, the argument of wether the night life has died down or become more lively.

In April 2021 clubs reignited our lives and brought the fun back! Or did it?

In March 2020 the announcement that Boris Johnson, as we all know, was devastating. Not only impacting the lives of all of us in many ways, but also impacting the economy of our beloved clubs, bars and pubs and the partier within us.

For many of first year students joining in 2021, just before attending university would’ve been their first time ever clubbing and showing off their dance moves. But for many of us we have seen a clear change in atmospheres in the clubs. From the change of music to the dance moves people are busting out on the dance floor which we can see have been seen on our #TikTok #ForYouPage.

”Some people said that this was the first time they’d ever been to a nightclub, as they had not turned 18 when the pandemic began’“ -https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-57869258

YOUR OPINIONS:

On my instagram @kerryhansonx I asked a poll for students to get intel on your thoughts on wether there’s a difference between clubs before and after COVID.

- DO YOU THINK CLUBBING WAS BETTER BEFORE OR AFTER COVID HIT? 75% of people said clubbing was better before COVID. Is this because of the new dance moves? Or is it because we have gotten used to not going out.

-DO YOU THINK THE IMPACT OF COVID 19 HAD A POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE IMPACT ON THE CLUBBING EXPERIENCE? 78% of people said it has had a negative impact on their experiences.

- From these results I thought maybe it was perhaps due to the clubs becoming more busy therefore the next question I asked was: DO YOU THINK CLUBS ARE MORE OR LESS BUSY POST COVID? 55% of people said yes.

-As someone who loves a night out on the town, I was intrigued to find out what you all prefered therefore the following question of DO YOU PREFER A NIGHT IN OR OUT? And the results of 61% of people saying in from a sample of people around my age of (18-25) really surprised me.

A NEW NORMAL.

During COVID-19, many clubs had to do their best to make money, some, although some found it harder than others, many clubs turned their club into bars especially during the UEFA EUROS 2020. During this time, many bars and clubs changed to allow us to watch the EUROS on the big screens, allowing us to feel apart of a community again.

Furthermore, when the pubs were allowed to open to be ‘outside dining only’ we saw many of them changed to tents with heating and we could also watch the EURO’s here. This alteration brand a new way of dining and drinking to many of us and became the new norm. This also allowed us to combat the unpredictable British weather.

BE CAREFUL

Although the party life is back, and COVID no longer is affecting us as much. There are still risks. The rise in spiking injections in October 2021 appeared once again and there was another risk to keep in mind. However from this, certain clubs and bars such as Slug And Lettuce (Milton Keynes) and Mosh (Leicester) have stickers or ‘cup condoms’ that go onto of cups to prevent spiking within our drinks.

This was made apparent through the ’Boycotting clubs’ in protest of the rising in spiking. An account called @brumnightin on instagram created ‘girls night in brum‘ on the 27th October 2021, where females didn’t attend the clubs, to make a stand.

I asked once again on instagram as to wether people thought that clubs do enough to prevent spiking and 95% of people said no. I further asked how this could be improved and here’s some suggestions.
